MDF calls on election entities do not obstruct journalists to perform their professional duties

Media Development Foundation (MDF) expresses its concern over the incident, which occurred at election headquarters of Irakli Gogokhia, Majoritarian (single mandate) MP Candidate of Georgian Dream in Zugdidi on June 13.

Members of headquarters abused Merab Rodonaia, Journalists of tspress, who had arrived at the office aiming at interviewing GD candidate about election program. Members of headquarters verbally abused Rodonaia, hit fist to his camera and splashed water onto his face.

We assessed the fact as the case of hampering professional activities of journalist. We call on the Inter-agency Task Force for Free and Fair Elections to study the incident.

In order to conduct elections under the normal conditions, we call on Georgian Dream, as well as other election entities and the members of election headquarters to allow journalists to perform their professional duties, reject abusive forms of communication and respect the voters' right to be informed.
